Medicare/Medigap
Medicare Supplement · Medigap
Predictable costs. Any doctor. No networks.
Medigap fills the gaps Original Medicare leaves — deductibles, coinsurance, and more. In NJ, premiums are the same at every age.

Plan G is the most popular plan for new Medicare enrollees since Plan F closed to new members in 2020. High-Deductible Plan G (HDG) carries the lowest premium, but you pay the first $2,870 (2025) of Medicare-covered costs yourself before it starts paying — the same benefits as Plan G once that deductible is met. Actual premiums vary by carrier — compare with a licensed advisor.

How it works
Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and Part D
Medigap doesn't replace Medicare — it supplements it. Original Medicare pays first; Medigap picks up the gaps. Add a stand-alone Part D plan for prescriptions and you have full coverage.
- Step 1: Original Medicare pays its share of covered services
- Step 2: Medigap pays your deductibles, coinsurance, and copays
- Step 3: Part D handles prescription drug costs separately
- Result: often little to no out-of-pocket for covered care
- See any Medicare-accepting provider in the US — no referrals required
NJ community rating: your age doesn't raise your Medigap premium
Most states let insurers charge more as you age (attained-age rating). New Jersey requires community rating — every enrollee pays the same monthly premium for the same plan from the same carrier, regardless of age. A 75-year-old pays the same as a 65-year-old. That makes NJ one of the best states in the country for Medigap.
Traveling internationally? Plans G and N have you covered.
Plans G and N include foreign travel emergency coverage — 80% of medically necessary emergency care abroad after a $250 deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime maximum. Original Medicare alone pays nothing outside the United States.
“I was worried about picking the wrong plan. My advisor walked me through Plan G in 20 minutes — I haven't had a surprise bill in three years.”
FAQ
Medigap questions
What is the difference between Plan G and Plan N?+
Plan G covers everything except the Part B deductible ($257 in 2025). Plan N also skips the Part B deductible and adds copays of up to $20 for office visits and $50 for emergency room visits. Plan N carries a lower monthly premium — it's the budget pick for people who rarely visit the doctor.
Can I still buy Plan F?+
Plan F is only available to those who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you turned 65 on or after that date, Plan F is not an option for you.
Does NJ community rating apply to all Medigap plans?+
Yes. New Jersey requires community rating for Medigap policies, meaning insurers must charge the same premium to all policyholders regardless of age. A 75-year-old and a 65-year-old pay the same monthly rate for the same plan from the same carrier.
Do I need a separate Part D plan with Medigap?+
Yes. Medigap covers Original Medicare cost-sharing but does not include prescription drug coverage. You must enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan separately.
Can I switch Medigap plans later?+
Outside your initial 6-month open enrollment window (when you're 65+ and on Part B), carriers in most states can require medical underwriting. New Jersey has some additional protections — but it's still easiest to choose the right plan from the start.
How does Medigap work when I travel internationally?+
Plans G and N include foreign travel emergency coverage — 80% of emergency care costs abroad after a $250 deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime maximum. Original Medicare pays nothing outside the US.
How much does Medigap cost in NJ?+
NJ Medigap rates depend on plan letter (G, N, or F), age, gender, smoking status, and ZIP code. Typical 65-year-old non-smoker rates for Plan G run roughly $140–$220/month and Plan N runs $90–$160/month. Northern NJ counties (Bergen, Hudson, Essex) tend to run 10–15% higher than southern NJ. A Yumi Health advisor can pull live quotes from every NJ Medigap carrier in under 5 minutes at no cost.
When can I enroll in Medigap with no medical underwriting in NJ?+
Your guaranteed-issue window is the 6 months starting the month you're 65 and enrolled in Part B. During this Medigap Open Enrollment Period, NJ carriers cannot deny you or charge more for health conditions. After this window, most carriers require medical underwriting. Certain trigger events (losing employer coverage, moving, plan terminating) reopen guaranteed-issue rights.
